After floods inundated the Gulf Coast, the Seattle-area chapter of the Red Cross faced a flood of its own: volunteers. The gush was so mighty it threatened to overwhelm the relief agency.
Before Katrina, the chapter had a little more than 2,000 volunteers. Since the disaster, 1,675 more folks have volunteered. Meanwhile, evacuees from the Gulf Coast were streaming unannounced into the agency's Rainier Valley office.
