How to create great retail streets

  • Neighborhoods should insist that developers design ground floor spaces for the “retail anchors” that make for a vibrant street.

    Before the malling of America and the proliferation of box stores most neighborhoods had thriving retail districts. Good retail streets are a treasure and the “third place” in their communities.

    Today several neighborhoods have retail streets that are still vibrant. These streets are the center of their neighborhood and act as a social, dining, entertaining and shopping hub for their community. The San Francisco Bay Area has many active neighborhood streets: North Santa Cruz Avenue in Los Gatos, Burlingame Avenue in Burlingame, Chestnut Street in San Francisco and Fourth Street in Berkeley.
