Recycling firm buys iconic ferries

OLYMPIA — The Washington State Department of Transportation Ferries Division has sold four 1927-built Steel Electric class vessels to California-based Eco Planet Recycling for a total of $200,000.

Ferries Assistant Secretary David Mosely said the boats were “unforgettable icons” of the Northwest. Completion of the sale allows the division to focus on getting new vessels built, starting with a 64-auto ferry that's now under construction.
