The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers may know soon how well the rushed repairs at the Howard Hanson Dam have lessened the chances of flooding this winter downstream in the Green River Valley.
Serious leaks were found in the flood-control dam in the Cascade foothills after last January's record rains. The corps has been pumping grout into the dam's leaky abutment and has worked with King County and local governments to bolster levees in the heavily developed valley south of Seattle.
